The PS6 price rumor going around right now — over $1,000 — rests on a single forum post. One post, from one leaker, with no receipts shown. Before you repeat it as fact, here’s what we actually know, what Sony has actually said, and the inflation math nobody else is showing you.
EN BREF
- Release: Unknown. Leakers say late 2027 to early 2028; analysts say late 2028 or later. Sony has announced nothing.
- Price: Sony has confirmed no price. The $1,000 claim traces to ONE October 2026 leaker post about component costs — unverified.
- Original data: Sony has charged nearly $1,000 for a console before — in real terms. The PS3’s infamous $599 (2006) works out to roughly $955 in 2026 dollars.
What has Sony actually confirmed?
Almost nothing about the PS6 itself. But the trail of hard evidence is longer than most coverage admits:
- Disc production ends January 2028. Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog (July 1, 2026) that physical disc production ends Jan 2028 — a generational handoff signal.
- AMD won the chip contract. Reuters reported in September 2024 that AMD beat Broadcom for the next PlayStation’s silicon — the strongest “the PS6 exists” evidence on record.
- Project Amethyst. Sony’s Mark Cerny has publicly detailed a joint Sony-AMD machine-learning collaboration — the tech backbone expected in the next generation.
- A “Generation Super Sampling” patent surfaced October 15, 2026 — Sony researching next-gen AI upscaling.
- The CFO quote. Sony’s CFO described the PS5 as in the “middle of its journey” (November 2025) — console generations don’t get called mid-life unless a successor is deep in development.
And one quote that matters for price: in investor Q&A, Sony said it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. Read that again. The era of cheap launch hardware is something Sony itself has publicly walked away from.
When is the PS6 coming out?
Two camps, two answers — and they disagree by a full year.
The leaker camp: late 2027 to early 2028. Reports say TSMC 3nm capacity is booked, chip production starts Q2 2027, and a tape-out has been reported. The disc-production cutoff in January 2028 fits this window neatly.
The analyst camp: late 2028 or after. Ampere Analysis points to the disc cutoff as evidence for end-of-2028 at the earliest. MST’s Gibson says after 2028.
My read: the disc cutoff is the hardest data point anyone has, and it suggests Sony is closing the PS5 era’s physical chapter right as 2028 begins. A holiday 2027 launch would make that cutoff weirdly late; late 2028 fits better. Budget for late 2028, hope for 2027.
Will the PS6 really cost over $1,000?
The claim: leaker Kepler_L2 posted on NeoGAF that “RAM + NAND alone is over $680” for the PS6 — a figure first aired earlier in 2026 that resurfaced this month, when VGC’s October 18 coverage set off a wave of “$1,000+ console” headlines across five-plus outlets. Context the headlines skipped: Kepler’s own estimate for the console’s total bill of materials climbed from ~$760 in March 2026 to ~$960 by July, driven by the DRAM/NAND crisis — the $680 is the memory-and-storage share of that ~$960 total, over 70% of the entire machine’s parts cost. Kepler has a genuinely strong track record on AMD silicon (TechSpot notes his “long history of correctly predicting graphics card releases”), but he showed no derivation for the $680 figure, and the $1,100–$1,200 numbers floating around are secondhand. Handle with care.
The inflation math nobody shows you
| Console | Launch | Launch price | In 2026 dollars |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | 1995 | $299 | ~$630 |
| PlayStation 2 | 2000 | $299 | ~$560 |
| PlayStation 3 | 2006 | $599 | ~$955 |
| PlayStation 4 | 2013 | $399 | ~$550 |
| PlayStation 5 | 2020 | $499 | ~$620 |
| PS5 (after 2026 hikes) | 2026 | $649.99 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Pro | 2024 | $699 | ~$730 |
Inflation adjustments are TechReview calculations from launch prices and CPI data.
Two uncomfortable truths in that table. First: Sony charged nearly $1,000 in real terms in 2006 — and the $599 PS3 nearly lost Sony the generation anyway. Second: the PS5’s jump from $499 to today’s $649.99 isn’t mostly greed; it almost exactly matches inflation ($499 in 2020 ≈ $650 now). Sony is chasing the cost curve, not running ahead of it.
So: a $899–$999 PS6 would be aggressive. But a PS5 Pro already sits at $899.99 after the 2026 hikes. The cliff edge is closer than the headlines suggest.

What about the specs?
Leakers can’t even agree with each other — which tells you how early this is.
- Moore’s Law Is Dead (citing a 2023 document): 8 Zen 6 cores, 40–48 compute units.
- TrendForce/TweakTown reporting: 9–10 cores, 52–54 compute units.
- Both camps agree on the direction: AMD CPU + GPU, heavy ray tracing, AI upscaling via Project Amethyst.
When two credible leak pipelines produce different silicon, the honest conclusion is that final specs aren’t locked — or someone is working from an old document. Either way, treat every “confirmed specs” list you see elsewhere as fiction.
Where does Xbox stand?
Ahead of Sony — at least on paper. Microsoft confirmed Project Helix at GDC in March 2026, with dev kits planned for 2027 and a “family of devices” strategy. Sony has confirmed nothing comparable. The next generation is real, it’s AMD-powered on both sides, and Microsoft is talking while Sony stays silent.
Should you wait for the PS6?
Buying a PS5 now: it’s mid-journey by Sony’s own words, with years of support ahead and a price that already reflects 2026’s component costs. No shame in it.
Waiting: if the analyst camp is right, you’re waiting until late 2028 — two full years. That’s a long time to skip a generation on the strength of leaks.
Bottom line: no date, no price, no confirmed specs — just one CFO quote, one disc deadline, and one very loud $1,000 rumor resting on a single post. Plan for late 2028 and $699–$999. Anything more precise is a guess wearing a headline.
