Every “best AI tools for students” list ranking on Google right now has the same problem: half of it is stale. One will tell you Copilot Pro costs $20 a month. Microsoft discontinued Copilot Pro in late 2025. Another will promise you a free year of Perplexity Pro through Airtel. That partnership ended in January 2026, and Airtel moved on to Adobe.
So this is the October 2026 version, checked on October 9: eight tools, real US prices, what the free tiers actually let you do, and which student discounts are still alive. Short version up front: most students don’t need to pay for anything. The free tiers in 2026 are genuinely usable, and the best student deals cost nothing: a full year of Google AI Pro, four months of ChatGPT Plus. But three of the “deals” you’ll find in other guides are dead, and one excellent tool offers students no discount at all.

If you use exactly one tool, make it this one
Gemini Notebook (Google renamed NotebookLM in July 2026; same product) is the only tool here that studies your material instead of the whole internet. Upload lecture PDFs and notes, up to 50 sources per notebook, and it builds study guides, quizzes, mind maps, and podcast-style Audio Overviews from them. Because it’s grounded in your sources, it’s far less likely to invent facts the way a chatbot can. That matters when you’re prepping for an exam.
The free tier is absurdly generous: 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and a usage budget that refreshes every 5 hours, with no expiry date on the plan itself. Paid tiers exist but mostly multiply limits. For most students, the free tier is the whole product.
Try this: upload one chapter, ask for a 10-question practice quiz, then generate an Audio Overview for the commute. That two-step loop is the highest-value study workflow in this article.
ChatGPT: the tutor that doesn’t just hand you answers
ChatGPT’s Study Mode, launched July 29, 2025, is the one feature in this list built for learning rather than cheating. It quizzes you Socratically, one question at a time, and won’t give you the answer until you try. It’s on every tier including free, which was the right call by OpenAI.
Plus is $20 a month. Students get four free months via SheerID verification, but claim it by October 31, 2026. After that it renews at $20.
Gemini: the best student deal, with a catch
Google’s August 2026 student offer is the most generous here: one year of AI Pro free. Claim by December 31, 2026. It also includes a student hub Google launched in August: flashcards, practice quizzes, exam prep, inside the Docs and Drive you already live in.
The catch is the oldest trick in subscriptions: it auto-renews at full price. Set a calendar reminder for December 2026 now. AI Pro at $19.99 a month is a very different proposition from free.
Perplexity: for when your professor asks “source?”
Perplexity is the research tool. Every answer comes with citations, which makes it the safest chatbot here for coursework: every claim comes with a citation you can check. The free tier gives you 3 Pro searches a day and one Research query a month, enough to know whether you need more.
Students get Education Pro at $10 a month via SheerID verification, the cheapest paid chatbot subscription on this list. One thing to unlearn: the free-year promo is over. Any guide still advertising it hasn’t been updated this year.
Claude: the best brain, zero discount
Claude is the strongest model here for dense reading and essay feedback. On paid plans, the newest models get up to 1M-token context, enough to upload entire textbooks and discuss them coherently (older models get 500K or 200K). The free tier is a real free plan, not a trial, but its context window is smaller.
The honest caveat: it’s the only tool on this list with no student discount. “Claude for Education” is something your university buys, not you. And if some site tries to sell you “Claude student codes,” walk away. Anthropic issues none.
Grammarly: the one that proves you wrote it
Grammarly’s Authorship creates a transparent record of your writing process. It isn’t a 2026 addition, Grammarly announced it back in August 2024. What’s new this year: in March, Authorship came to Superhuman’s docs with agent-specific attribution that flags agentic AI use. When professors run AI detectors, that’s the academic edge no chatbot offers: proof of work. It also added citation tools.
The free tier gives you 100 AI prompts a month, enough for light essay polishing. Pro is $30 a month ($12 on annual billing), and Grammarly’s own support page confirms 50% off for students via SheerID: $72 for the first year on annual billing (about $6 a month). One period only, then full price. Set the reminder.
Two you probably shouldn’t pay for
Copilot’s entire argument is Office integration: AI inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the apps you already submit work in. That’s genuinely useful. Microsoft’s 12-months-free Premium promo from January is dead, it expired March 1, 2026. The standing student deal is Microsoft 365 Personal at $4.99 a month, half the $9.99 list price, with Copilot in the Office apps. At five bucks it’s fair if you live in Word. Otherwise don’t.
Notion is the best semester organizer here: notes, wikis, and databases in one place, with a free Plus tier for students on a school email. But in May 2025 Notion killed its $10 AI add-on and moved full AI exclusively into the $20-a-month Business plan. The free AI trial is a teaser. Pair free Notion with a free chatbot instead of paying $20 for the combo.
Three prompts worth stealing

You don’t need a prompt-engineering course. These three cover 90% of studying:
- The tutor: “Quiz me on [topic] one question at a time. Don’t give me the answer until I try, then explain what I got wrong.” (ChatGPT Study Mode, Gemini)
- The condenser: Upload your chapter or notes: “Turn this into a one-page summary plus a 10-question practice quiz.” (Gemini Notebook)
- The fact-checker: “Explain [topic] with academic sources I can cite.” (Perplexity)
The pattern: make the AI test you, shrink your material, and show its sources. Everything else is decoration.
What I’d actually do
Claim the free year of Google AI Pro before December 31, use Gemini Notebook free for exam prep, and grab four free months of ChatGPT Plus before October 31 if you want the stronger model. Total cost: zero.
Pay only when a free tier starts saying no. That’s the whole strategy, and it’s enough.
Updated Oct 9, 2026: reframed for US readers; factual corrections applied (Authorship date, Notion add-on date, Perplexity free limits, Copilot student deal, Claude free-tier context, Grammarly billing).
