Wordle #1940 hints for Sunday, Oct 11

Read these slowly. Each one gives away something new, so stop the moment you feel lucky.

  • Repeats. None. Five different letters, so don’t double up.
  • Vowels. Two of them: U and A.
  • Starts with. U. An opening letter that breaks most starter strategies.
  • Second letter. N. That locks the opening pair.
  • Meaning. What you do to a pen before you can write with it.

Difficulty 4/5: why this one is tricky, and how to beat it

This one earns the rating. Words that start with a vowel break the standard playbook, because the most popular openers all probe consonants first. If your starter didn’t test U, your first guess told you almost nothing, and you’re effectively solving from guess two.

The way out: once the hints give you the UN- opening, don’t waste a guess re-testing vowels. Play UNITE as your probe. It confirms the opening pair and tests three new letters (I, T, E) at once. None of the three are in today’s answer, so the guess isn’t wasted even when it misses. It buys you three eliminations in a single move, which is exactly what a probe is for. From there, think verbs, not nouns, and the word practically spells itself. (AUDIO and ADIEU work too, but only if you haven’t read the hints yet.)

Today’s Wordle answer is UNCAP. It’s a verb meaning to remove the cap or lid from something. Uncap the pen, uncap the bottle. Five letters, zero tricks, and still it hid behind that opening U all morning.

Wordle questions, answered

What other Wordle answers started with U?

Vowel-led answers don’t come around every week, which is part of why today felt awkward. Recent ones include UDDER (puzzle #1320, January 29, 2025) and UPPER (puzzle #1314, January 23, 2025). No pattern to carry into tomorrow, though.

Has today’s answer been a Wordle answer before?

No. Wordle has never repeated an answer, so it is now retired from the rotation. If you’re guessing a word you’ve seen as a past answer, cross it off.
